Subject: installation of chemical embedded anchors, as required
to satisfy lateral force resisting system
Dear Mr. Holmes:
I have reviewed your letter of 9-4-98. Here you have
described your procedure for installation of chemical embedded
anchors. The procedure is correct as described in all ways.
I have not observed the installation of these anchors; however,
if the procedure was followed as described, then this element of
the lateral force resisting system is completely satisfied.
Please call me if you have any further questions regarding this
matter.

To the City of Springfield Building Department
and Branch Engineering:
This letter is in reference to the HD2A anchor bolts installed at 730 Poltava St., Springfield, OR
(city job #980609) by J. R. Wilson Construction, lie. #83370. The anchors have been installed at
the locations referenced on the plans of Branch Engineering, job #98-123, and in accordance with
the Simpson Stong-TieR Connectors specification sheet for epoxy-tie adhesive #ET-22 (see
attach~ \'4" cP
I. Th~iameter holes were drilled in the existing concrete foundation to a nominal depth of
91/2". "
2. The holes were cleaned out by using oil-free compressed air and then a nylon brush. This was
followed with more air and finally vacuum to remove any remaining dust.
3. The Epoxy- TieThf Adhesive was mixed and then inserted into the bottom of each hole, filling
the hole halfway with ET.
4. The anchors were then inserted and turned until they hit the bottom of the hole for an
imbedded depth of9 1/2", per plan specifications.
Furthermore, I, J.R. Wilson, assume full responsibility for their installation and hold neither
Branch Engineering or the City of Springfield Building Department liable.

Insert cartridge into dispensing tool.
Remove plugs from cartridge and purge some epoxy off to the side to set the cartridge wip.
at the same level. Attach a clean mixing nozzle which is free of gelled or hardened material.
Tighten retaining nut on nozzle. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN.
Dispense bead of Epoxy-Tie off to the side to check for proper mixture
(a uniform gray color) before using.
Caution: Epoxy will start to harden in the mixing nozzle after 7-8 minutes. Epoxy will
harden faster as the air temperature increases. Replace nozzle to avoid blowouts.
Note: When installing the Epoxy-Tie, holes must be free of standing water, frost or ice
prior to injection of the epoxy.
If using a pneumatic dispensing tool, air pressure must be regulated at 80-100 psi.
Store a partially-used cartridge up to one year at a temperature above 4soF.

Non-ASTM certified Test
To verify the hold of the anchor bolts, a 5-ft pry bar with a 1" pry-end was inserted under the
HD2A assembly and the contractor put the full force of his body (165 lbs) on the other end of the
bar.
1 ~"-f
,
X f- 5y --I
L
Ie> (bs
The upward force, X, imparted on the anchor bolt is approximated by the following equation:
X lbs · (1/12) ft = 1651bs. (59/12) ft
Solving for X, the equation yields
X Ibs = 1651bs · (59/12) ft
(1/12) ft
= 9,735 Ibs
While an approximation, it certainly demonstrates that the bolts are holding and appear to be
holding to higher than the calculated requirements per bolt of 319 lbs (SWOO I), 559 Ibs
(SW003), 538 Ibs (SW004), 423 Ibs and 10081bs (SW002).
