Memorable Capture: As with all the K9 teams, Cyrill and Officer Kendrick have a memorable capture. That was when they were called to the town of Vida to locate three armed robbery suspects that Oregon State Police had lost sight of. Cyrill was able to track one of the suspects to an island of the McKenzie River. Just ten feet from the suspect, as he hid in the tall grass, he chose to jump in the River to try and get away. He was soon plucked out by rescue boats when he was suffering from hypothermia. He was later asked why he jumped in the river and he said he would rather take his chances in the water than deal with Cyrill. As night fell the search for the other two was suspended. However, determination paid off and a second suspect was located by the State Police as he was walking down the road. K9 Cyrill again jumped into and searched the area. Cyrill indicated scent of a person in some nearby bushes. After warnings were given and the person not giving up, Cyrill was sent into the bushes. Cyrill was able to pull the third and final suspect out to the waiting handcuffs of assisting Troopers and Officers. Cyrill will be missed as a partner for Officer Kendrick, but is adapting quickly to being a family pet, something he has certainly earned. Cyrill's replacement, Tjenco, has some large "paws" to fill but he is up for the task. K9 Creck: • K-9 Creck was born in the Czech Republic on 4-17-04. He then spent the next three years training to become a police dog. • In March of 2007 Creck made his way to Southern California where he waited amongst several other dogs to be chosen by a police agency. • Sgt. Charboneau along with Officer's Kendrick and Humphries chose K-9 Creck, as well as K-9 Bronko. • Upon returning to Springfield K-9 Creck was partnered with then Officer Humphrie and began working on 05-07-07. Officer Humphries worked with Creck until December 2008 when he was promoted to detective. • During his time With Officer Humphries Creck captured six suspects. • K-9 Creck then moved in with Officer Del Castillo to continue his career catching bad guys starting January 6, 2008. • Over the last few years Officer DelCastillo and K-9 have worked together to capture 57 suspects. Memorable Capture: One of Crecks most memorable captures came in February of 2009 when LCSO requested assistance with locating an armed robbery suspect that had robbed a market in Marcola at gunpoint. K-9 Creck successfully tracked the suspect from the store, several blocks away to the travel trailer he was staying in. The suspect was arrested and all the money was recovered. We all know that Springfield Police has an excellent K-9 program and its that much more rewarding when we can assist other agencies and show them just how good our K-9 program is. Sadly in July of 2011 K-9 Creck began having problems using his beck legs. After extensive testing Creck was diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy which is a condition where the protective sheath around the spine deteriorates. There is no treatment for the condition which over time causes the dog to lose complete control of the back half of his body. In October 2011 Creck had deteriorated to the point that he could no long effectively do his job and was retired. Creck now lives at home with Officer DelCastillo where he has become an inside dog and lounges around with the family.
