I'm writing today to try to fix a longstanding addressing problem on S. 68th. In the past, the problem has
caused occasional frustration or inconvenience. Recently, this addressing problem caused a 9-1-1
response delay when a S. 68th Street resident called for help. When the call was made, the resident
gave a S. 68th Street address. but the dispatch computer could not verify that address. The dispatch
computer showed the resident's house number to be on 68th Place. Following up on the problem it was
found that 25 such addressing problems exist.
So what caused the problem?
The resident was correct in giving the 68th Street address. That's what the street signs say and that is
the address on record with the post office. The computer searches the addresses come from a County
address file that is based on the original subdivision maps that were created when your neighborhood
was first developed. The original subdivision plat map shows the resident's address as S. 68th Place.
Based on our records, the County address record does not match your street/postal address.
The addressing problem does not affect all of the houses on 68th. For most of your neighbors, the
County address records, the signage and the postal addresses are all consistent and there is no
confusion. They are not receiving this letter.
How can we resolve it?
Our goal is to correct the problem while minimizing the disruption to you and your neighbors. One
approach would be to change the County address records and subdivision plats to match the street
signage and postal address for your house. Before choosing a course of action, we would like to hear
your ideas about what might work best for you. You are invited to attend a neighborhood discussion
on this matter on Tuesday, June 8'" in the Jesse Main Room at the Springfield City Hall. The meeting
will start at 6:30 and continue until participating neighbors understand the issues, the possible
options for resolving the addressing problem, and have expressed their views about how to proceed.
A letter will be sent out to all affected residents following the meeting to explain the course of action
that will taken.
I hope that you will take the opportunity to participate in resolving the problem on June 8'h. I will be out
of the office until Tuesday June 1", but I would be glad to answer your questions when I return.
Sincerely
