Subject: RE: Gateway Mall - Cabela's fire hydrant
Tina and Ryan,
Thanks for waiting. I talked to Paul Esselstyn (one of our operations battalion chiefs), Ladd 80yce and
8art McKee with SUB Water Division. Ladd and Bart are proposing to completely remove that center
fire hydrant instead of relocating it. Since water flows are in the 2,500 gallon per minute range at 90
psi or better with only a 10 psi residual drop provided by 12 inch fire lines and fed by three different
sources, the' two existing fire hydrants on the northwest and southwest corner of Ashley's/Cabela's
are sufficient. The furthest hose lay reach is 300 feet, well within the maximum length allowed by
code. Also, since this 54,714 square foot anchor building is sprinklered and Type II construction, fire
flow requirements are for 1,500 gpm per 2007 Springfield Fire Code Table 8105.1 and sections
8105.3,1 and 8105.3.1.1.
Therefore, SUB Water Division's proposal for removing the central fire hydrant in front of
Ashley's/Cabela's instead of relocation is acceptable with Springfield Fire Marshal's Office.

Andy,
Please refer to the attachment and could you please forward this to the Fire Marshal that has been assigned to the
Cabela's project? We are in the process of coordinating the proposed hydrant re-Iocation with SUB.
This location is being considered because of the close proximity to the existing utility easement. Please review and
comment.
