DEVELOPMENT SERVICES PUBLIC WORKS METROPOLITAN WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT CERTIFIED LETTER 225 FIFTH STREET SPRINGFIELD, OR 97477 (503) 726-3753 June 6, 1991 Roy Gray 3345 Game Farm Rd. Springfield, OR 97477 SUBJECT: Fire Damage Inspection at 3345 Game Farm Road, Springfield, Oregon Dear lIIr. Gray: At request of the Springfield Fire and Life Safety Department, the Building Safety Dh'ision conducted an electrical inspection at the abo,'e referenced address. The inspection request was the result of lightning striking the structure On May 16, 1991. When I arri,'ed at the dwelling for the inspection, I was met by the resident of the structure. He pointed out where lightning had struck a tree adjacent to the residence and where the lightning had entered the structure at the northwest corner. The exterior corner of the building was discolored from smoke and had a black marking streak from the roof o,'erhang to the foundation. On the inside of the building, the resident pointed out where a couple of the wall deyice plates had been pressured off the electrical switches from the force of the lightning strike. He said the electrician had replaced an electrical cable in the northwest bedroom and seyeral damaged fuses. He also indicated that the electrical circuits were working satisfactorily, except for an occasional blinking in the lights. The safety of the electrical system in the dwelling is directly related to the quality of the electrical cables and the integrity of their mechanical connections. To assure that the existing "iring system is satisfactory for continued use, I strongly recommend the following: 1. All cables and electrical wire be tested for continuity; including the ground rod conductor and the water pipe bonding conductor. 2. All switches, receptacles and junction boxes be inspected for loose connections. 3. The electrical cable insulation shall be checked with a "Megger" as described in the National Electrical Code 550.12a. If you haye any questions or would like clarification of the abo,'e requirements, please contact me at 726.3663.
