HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 03-35 07/07/2003 . RESOLUTION 03 -- 35 A RESOLUTION NAMING THE FUTURE PIONEER P ARKW A Y EXTENSION PROJECT THE "MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. P ARKW A Y" IN HONOR OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to peaceful non-violent actions in the pursuit of equality and racial integration and for this received the Noble Peace Prize; and WHEREAS, Dr. King's work fostered not only a recognition of the evils of racism, but also serves as an example of the power of peaceful persistence in the pursuit of liberty and justice; and WHEREAS, it is fit and proper to create a permanent memorial to Dr. King, to honor his memory and to remind us all of the obligation on each citizen to take up the struggle for the betterment of all; and WHEREAS, the leadership of the City of Springfield recognizes that "the livability of our City, now and inthe future, depends on how we treat each other" and takes a strong and unified stand against any form of violence, harassment, threat or intimidation against any person or group of people whether based on their race, nationality, religion or disabilities as evidenced in Resolution 01-56; and WHEREAS, Mayor Sidney W. Leiken formed the Martin Luther King Advisory Committee to study the feasibility of a memorial to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and requested Council President Tammy Fitch to head a committee to this end; and . WHEREAS, The Martin Luther King Advisory Committee met on April 2, 2003 and unanimously recommended to the Mayor that the future Pioneer Parkway Extension road from Hayden Bridge Road to Beltline be named "Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway"; and WHEREAS, Pioneer Parkway Extension is a fully funded limited access minor arterial City street project that is targeted for construction in 2005; and NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the common Council of the City of Springfield finds and determines that the future Pioneer Parkway Extension road project, after it is constructed, will be named "Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway." of Adopted by the Common Council of the City of Springfield, Oregon, this July 2003. 7th day Adopted by a vote of 4 for and 1 against. ,,~ ATTEST: . ~~..~ Ity Recorder Attachment A Page 1 of 1 REVIEWED 11 APPROVEg ~_~~~~ORM..J \..~~ DATE: ~(::)<::::l~ OFFICE OF CITY ATTORNEY
