Project Overview
OR 126, which is 40 years old, is not designed to safely and efficiently support the people
and goods that need to travel through and within the growing Springfield area. The Oregon
Department of Transportation (ODOT), the City of Springfield and Lane County are
working together to prepare an Expressway Management Plan for OR 126 between 1-5 and
Main Street to solve these problems.
Over the past three years, the project team has worked to understand the problems on the
highway and develop design concepts to improve the intersections at 52nd and Main
Streets. In 2007, the project's Ad Hoc Steering Committee selected several interchange and
intersection concepts to advance for more detailed design work.
During this phase of the project (Phase 3) the project team will refine and select preferred
designs for improvements at 52nd Street and Main Street, including potential changes to
driveway access in the area. A subsequent project phase will comp~te similar work for
the Pioneer Parkway, Mohawk Boulevard, and 42nd Street interchanges. Because funding
for improvements over a long stretch of a highway is rarely available at one time, the

Concepts
In 2007, the following concepts were suggested for more study based on traffic operations, safety, and
impacts to community, businesses and the environment.
At 52nd Street, these include:
. 2 concepts - keep a signalized intersection (traffic light), but add additional turn lanes
. 2 concepts - replace signal with a grade-separated interchange that has on- and off-ramps
At Main Street, these include:
. 1 concept - keep a signalized intersection, but add additional turn lanes
. 3 concepts - replace signal with a grade-separated interchange that has on- and off-ramps
. 2 concepts - keep signal at this location, but provide an exit for southbound left turns from OR 126
to Main Street and a bridge over Main for north-south traffic
