We are writing concerning the proposed development at 3995 Marcola Road, Springfield. Our
facility is located across the street at 3950 Marcola Road and operates as Oregon Industrial
Lumber Products. We want to express potential public safety concerns. We have 20-25 trucks
per week that come in and go out of our facility. Historically, if we had more than two trucks
being loaded or unloaded on the plant site, trucks waiting their turn would do so on the shoulder
of Marc 01 a Road and could do so without obstructing traffic. Approximately 20 years ago,
Marcola Road was widened and a sidewalk was installed on the east side of the road opposite our
facility. Now, when we have trucks "waiting their turn" they are in the center turn lane. We work
very hard at moving these waiting trucks in and out of our facility as quickly as possible,
Our concerns center on having a driveway directly opposite ours, allowing entering and exiting
vehicles to Marcola Road. While those vehicles generally will have a good vision of traffic in
both directions, with increasing traffic on Marcola Road and with trucks waiting in the center
turn lane to access our facility, the potential for vehicular accidents could increase. At some
point the burden of "solving" a potential problem could fall on Oregon Industrial Lumber and the
trucks accessing our facility.
We do not oppose the proposed development but would suggest the following alternatives:
I: use of the existing driveway only without the installation of a second driveway,
2: or, moving the second driveway further northeast so that is is better positioned for
clear vision and access,
3: and/or, using the southwest driveway for entrance only for northbound vehicles and the
north driveway as an entrance and exit for north and south bound vehicles.
Respectfully yours,
--r---./.~
