RE: Fireplace Flue Inspection - 1300 Pine St., Springfield, OR
As you requested, on January 9, 1987 1 made an inspection of this fireplace masonry and
chimney flue in order to determine its present condition after a flue fire had occurred. I
find that the fireplace and chimney masonry is in satisfactory condition and any cracks
existed prior to the flue fire and were probably due to previous settlement or movement.
Observation from the top of the chimney indicates there is only one section of clay flue
liner at the top and the remaining chimney is just the brick masonry with some type of
mortar parging on the interior. There was no flue liner for the entire la' length of the
chimney from the fireplace throat to the top. My observation is that the fireplace
masonry is still i.n sati.sfactory condition and that i.f the chimney is to continue to be
used for the existing fireplace insert wood stove, then a prefabricated metal flue U.ner
can be installed inside the existing chimney and fitted to the fireplace opening or the
sleeve connection from the insert. The reconstruction of the wood framing above the
fireplace mantel should be done in a manner to maintai n the required clearance to
combustible material from the masonry chimney.
I hope )'ou find tilis report adequate for your pu::'poses at this. Please contnet me if you
have further questions. Thank you for this opportunity to be of service.
Very truly yours,
Emile Mortier, P.E.
