At your request, the Springfield Building Safety Division conducted an Occupancy In- spection at the above referenced address, The proposed use of the building as an "Auto Body and Paint Shop" will categorize its usage as an H-4 Occupancy. We understand that you intend to erect an addition that will house the paint shop, which would be categorized as an H-l Occupancy. Specific requirements pertaining to the proposed paint shop occupancy will not be discussed in this report, except to indicate that a i-hour occupancy separation is required between the H-4 body shop and the H-l proposed paint shop. addition, The following required modifications and repairs will bring the existing building into compliance with the State and City Code regulations for the proposed H-4 Oc- cupancy, but will not allow for occupancy and use of the proposed addition until adequate facilities for paint spraying are also provided. . .... STRUCTURAL SPECIALTY CODE AND FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY 1. The building projection on the east side of the residence must be removed to pro- vide adequate separation from the shop. ,2. The west wall of the shop must be protected by 2 hour fire resistive construction with a 3/4 hour rated door in the existing opening or the opening must be closed off with the required fire protective construction, 3. The south building wall must be protected by 1 hour fire resistive construction and the existing window removed or replaced with a window having a 3/4 hour fire resistive rating. ,4. Both the south and west walls require parapets to be added with the same degree of fire resistance as required for each wall below, The parapets must extend to a point 30" above where the roof and wall intersec't, 5. Mr, Don Steenblock Occupancy Inspection 3385 Olympic Street June 17, 1985 Pag 2. resistance rating of 1 hour in order to allow existing wiring in the walls to be used for the proposed occupancy, '-,' The building must have a minimum of 2 personnel exit'doors at least 3'0" x 6'8" in size and located a distance apart not less than one half the diagonal dimension of the building (measured in a straight line between doors). The doors must swing in the direction of exit travel, be operable without the use of a key or any special knowledge or effort, and be provided with a 5' landing outside. Any exit door located in a fire resistive wall shall have an approved self closing mechanism. . '" j. . , . . 7. The existing roo:f assembly is acceptable as equivalent to the required Class B fire retardant type. 8. Attic ventilation is required with a total area equal to 1 square foot of vents for each 150 square foot of attic area. Such ventilation shall not be located in the exterior walls requiring fire resistive construction~ 9. A wood stove may be used as a heat source in the existing building if the following criteria are met: a. No painting is allowed in this area. b, The stove must be installed at least 18" above the floor. c. A wood stove permit must be obtained and the installation approved by '.' ", , 10, Provide a mechanical ventilation system for the existing building that is capable of providing a minimum of 5 CFM of outside air with a total cir- culated air of not less than 15 CFM per occupant in all portions of the ." building during times when the building is occupied; or provide window area equal to 1/10 of the building floor area, half of which must be openable for ventilation. Such windows may not be located in fire resistive walls. 11. Flammable and hazardous materials may be stored in the existing building up to the amounts indicated on the attached Table 9-A. Larger quantities will require specially constructed enclosures. . . .' The above items are requirements for the existing building only. Items such as paving, parking and other development improvements are covered in your zone change request approval, and the plan review of the additional 'structure(s) needed to complete the proposed occupancy, I ...."'.., .
