A technical report (as defined under Uniform Fire Code Section 103,1,1) from a testing agency, certifying that the byproducts for the sandblasting operations are non-combustible, . An increased sprinkler density (as approved by the Fire Marshal), suitable for the excess fire load which may result from a fire in the blast room, which may be caused by the improper storage or use of combustible materials, . Sign at the door to the blast room stating "THIS ROOM RESTRICTED TO NON- COMBUSTIBLE CONTENTS ONLY" in 6" high 1/2" stroke letters. There are combustible materials and finishes within this room, in the form of plywood wall surfacing and rubber sheeting, . There may be residual rubber from the rolls which may be introduced into the air during blasting operations, Based on the above we request clarification of the following: . If the owner could demonstrate that there was no significant amount of combustible material removed from the rolls during blasting and if the plywood and rubber sheeting were replaced with a non-combustible surfacing (such as cement board), would the Fire Marshall permit the sprinkler omission? The highly abrasive sandblasting process in this room will lead to failures in the sprinkler heads, and accidental discharge of the fire sprinkler system, . If water is introduced into the blasting and sand-reprocessing equipment, the room and all of its related equipment will have to be entirely cleaned and the process will be shut down for approximately one week, at a large cost. . The room is constructed of masonry walls and pre-cast concrete decking, with steel doors, making the entire structure non-combustible (the walls of the room are sheathed with %" plywood with 3/32" rubber sheeting attached over the plywood to dampen the rebound of sandblast particles and avoid erosion of the masonry), . The room is used for sandblasting non-combustible metals from large steel rolls. The sand is transported from this room to a filtering system and reprocessed, Based on the above we request permiSSion to omit the fire sprinklers from the sandblast room, If you have any questions, please call.
