Dear Mr. Marks:
The 'gyp-crete' fill between floor blocking in the two-hour party wall, as shown in detail 1/ A9, is not
necessary to maintain the fire rating of the wall. It has been our experience with other jurisdictions that I-
1/2" of solid wood blocking provides equivelant fire protection as one layer of type X gypsum board. The
wood blocking shown in the detail is providing the equivelant protection of three layers of gypsum board on
each side of the wall, which is in excess of the required amount of protection for a two-hour wall. The wood
blocking provided between the two stud walls at the floor line are providing 10 inches of solid wood to
prevent fire from traveling through the cavity. This is more than adequate to maintain the integrity of the
wall.
