Dear Mr. Wilson:
On September 28, 1988 I visited Dave's Market, 3444 Main Street, Sprin9fie1d
and took noise level measurements. I used the equipment supplied to me by
your office. I calibrated the meter as per your instructions both before
and after the noise levels were measured. Mr. Bill McGlasson, owner of the
market accompanied me while the noise levels were measured. Measurements
were made at two separate locations. There are marked #1 and #2 on the
enclosed map. I have enclosed a copy of an assessor's map of the subject
property to assist you in understanding where the measurements were taken.
Dave's Market is located on Tax Lot 800. The refrigeration unit is located
at the rear of the store. There is a small mobile home located on Tax Lot
1000. A hedge separates the two properties. The mobile home is
approximately 5 feet from the property line of Tax Lot 800. The first set
of readings were taken standing just inside the property line of Tax Lot
1000 directly east of the refrigeration unit. The,noise level before the
refrigeration unit was turned on measured consistently at 53. When trucks
were going by along Main Street the level would sometimes go all the way up
to 60. After the unit was turned on, the noise level was consistently
measured at 72 with the noise of traffic on Main Street sometimes raising
the level higher.
The second set of noise levels was' taken from the northeast corner of Tax
Lot 800, where it adjoins Tax Lot 700. This is located approximately 25-35
feet from the corner of the house on Tax Lot 700. The noise level at this
point was measured at 53. When the refrigeration unit was turned on the
level was measured at 58.
I hope these readings will be helpful in determining if there is a
violation. The owner of the market told me that while he is planning to
enclose the equipment at some point in the future, he is not willing to
consider abatement strategies at this time unless he is required to.
