Fire Damage Inspection Of Market Building
at 5705 Main St., Springfield, Oregon
Dear Mr. Harrison,
" On Friday, October 27, 1978, Dan Smith and I met with you and your partner,
Dennis Atkinson, at the site of your fire damaged market to p~rform a struc-
tural inspection, The nature of this i-nspection"at your request, was to
inform you of Building Department Requirements with regard to reconstruction
and possible reuse of part of the fire damaged structure. The following items
were determined during this inspection:
(A) Demolish and remove the remaining roof structure and supporting pipe
columns as soon as possible, since they are not suitable for reuse and
pose a potential hazard in their current condition.
(B) In o~r opinion, the existing concrete block walls could be reused, but
would require the removal and reconstruction of the top, five block
courses to'the point of bearing for the beams supporting the roof.

Our'observation indicates that the temperatures reached during the fire
were not sufficient i'n most of the building to have caused permanent
damage to the existing reinforced concrete block walls. We recommend,
however, that an independent ,testing agency be employed 'to test a few
representative samples of the existing concrete block and it's rein-
forcing to verify that the structural integrity of the walls, was not
, impaired as a result of the fire.
All electrical wiring must be replaced. We discussed th~'~ossible
, reuse of the existing electrical raceway system under the concrete
slab. At our request, J. R. Matteson, Electrical Inspector for the
City of Springfield, also visited the site on November 6, 1978. It
was his determination that we could not allow reU5e of any existing
electrical raceway without its being exposed for visual inspection.
