HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/26/2009 Work Session City of Springfield Work Session Meeting MINUTES OF THE WORK SESSION MEETING OF THE SPRINGFIELD CITY COUNCIL HELD TUESDAY, MAY 26, 2009 The City of Springfield Council met in a work session in the City Manager's Office, 225 Fifth Street, Springfield, Oregon, on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 5:03 p.m., with Mayor Leiken presiding. From the City Manager's Office, they left to tour the Lokey Laboratory, 1443 East 13th Avenue, Eugene, Oregon. " ATTENDANCE Present were Mayor Leiken and Councilors Lundberg, Wylie, Leezer, and Pishioneri. Also present were City Manager Gino Grimaldi, Community Development Manager John Tamulonis, Planning Commissioner Frank Cross, and City Recorder Amy Sowa. Councilor Ralston was absent (excused). 1. Tour ofVniversity of Oregon (VoID) Lokey Laboratorv. The Mayor and Council met at the City Manager's Office at 5:00pm, then transported over to the VoID Lokey Laboratory. Greg Rikhoff, VoID Director of Community Relations, welcomed the Mayor, Council, and staff to the Lokey Laboratory. He introduced VoID President Dave Frohnmayer who was attending the first part of this meeting. He also introduced Rich Linton, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. Mr. Linton provided a power point presentation highlighting the successes of the research programs and the facility. Following the power point presentation, Mr. Linton introduced Dr. Ron Stock, Medical Director from PeaceHealth, and Jill Hoggard Green, Chief Operating Officer of PeaceHealth. Mr. Stock and Ms. Green talked about the partnership they had with the university and Lokey Laboratory and their hopes for future ventures. Dave Johnson, VoID Chemistry Professor and Director with Center for Advanced Materials Characterization (CAMCOR), spoke about CAMCOR and how it was used as a high tech extension service. This lab was open for use by other universities and businesses, and was a great asset to our community. Chris Larson, General Contact for Lokey Laboratories, discussed how they used this facility as a selling point when talking with businesses considering Oregon as a site to locate. John Donovan, VoID Microanalytical Facility Director, said the attendees would split into small groups for the tour. Before they started, he introduced Garrett Cogburn, a Thurston High School senior who had served as an intern with Mr. Donovan. The attendees split into small groups and toured the facility. Other staff from the programs that were present and assisted with the tour City of Springfield Council Work Session Minutes May 26, 2009 Page 2 were Kurt Langworthy, Manager, CAMCOR Nanofabrication and Imaging Facility, and Dr. Lev Azkharov, Director, X-Ray Crystallography Facility. Mayor Leiken thanked the staff members for the wonderful presentation and tour. He hoped the City of Springfield and the Vniversity of Oregon could partner in the future.
