RE: Electrical Inspection Referral
Dear Mr. SteeLe:
On April 24, 1989 at the request of the Springfield Fire and. Life
Safety Department, I visited your business to inspect the location
of the electrical service equipment which was reported to be in a
concealed location. I apologize for any misunderstanding or
misconception that resulted from my inspection visit. It was
never my intent to act in a manner that could be perceived as
unprofessional or in a threatening demeanor. As a Springfield
employee, I am committed to the belief that service to the
community is my primary responsibility and to provide that service
in a responsive and effective way in order to help make our City a
safe place to live and work.
As you are aware, my visit to your place of business was motivated
by a referral that noted a potential electrical safety hazard.
Article 230-70 (A) of the State Electrical Specialty Code provides
in part:
The service disconnecting means shall be installed inside or
outside a building or other structure at a readily accessible
location. Service equipment shall not be located in closets,
cupboards, bathrooms, attics, or over grounded equipment.
The reason for this requirement is for the electrical
disconnecting means to be visible and readily accessible to all
users or occupants of the building in an emergency situation
and/or for safe maintenance.
