General
This specificafion is lor use over any type of approved structural
deck (without insulationl which con receive and adequately retain
nails or other types of mechanical fasteners tho! may be recom'
mended by the deck manufactvrer. Examples 01 such decks ore
wood and plywood. This specificafion is not far use directly over
lightweight, insulafing concrete decks.
Design and installation of the cleek and/or substrate
must result in the roof draining freely and ta outlets
numerous enough and so located as to remove water
promptly and completely. Areas where water pands
for more than 24 hours are unacceptable and are
not eligible ta receive a Schuller Roofing Systems
Guarantee.
Note: All general instructions contained in the current Schuller
Commercial/Industrial Roofing Systems Manual should be consid.
ered part of this specificafian.
Floshings
Flashing details can be found in the 'Bituminous Flashings' section
of the Schuller Commercial/Industrial Roofing Systems Manual.
Application
Over wood board decks, one ply of sheathing paper must be used
under the base felt and on lop 01 the wood board deck.
Note: On roof decks with slopes up 10 l' per foot (83.3 mm/ml.
the roofing felts may be installed either perpendicular or porallello
the roof incline. On slopes over 1" per foot (83.3 mm/ml. refer 10'
Paragraph 6.11 of this section for special requirements.
Using GlasBose, GlasBose Plus, Ventsulafion, or PermaPly 28,
slort with a 12' {305 mm) width (a specific base sheet may be a
condifion of Guarantee). The following base sheet courses are 10
be applied full width, lapping the preceding felt 2' (51 mm) on the
side laps and 4" (102 mm) an the end laps. Nail the side laps 9"
(229 mm) o.c. Down the longitudinal center of each felt, place two
rows of nails spaced approximately 11' (279 mml apart, with the

nails staggered on appraximately 18' (457 mm) centers. Use noils

mum diameter cops. For additional fastener in~_.,....::_.., refer to
the Fastener Dota in the 'Roof Deck" section of the current Schuller
Commercial/Industrial Roofing Systems Manual.
Using GlasPIy Premier, PermaPly'R, or GlasPlv IV, apply a "ieee C
18" {457 mm) wide, then over that, a full width piece. The follow- '
ing felts are 10 be applied full width overlapping the preceding felts
by 19' (483 mml so that at least 2 plies 01 felt cover the base
felt/substrate at alllocafions. Install each felt so tho! it is firmly and
unilormly set, without voids, inlo the hot bitumen (within :t250F
[:t 140C] of the EVT) applied just belore the felt at a nominal rate af
231bs. per square (1.1 kg.m'l over the enfire surface. Inslollation
over parous substrates such as rool insulafion may require up 10
331bs. per square (1.6 kg/m'l of hot bitumen.
Surfacing
Prior 10 application of GlasKap, cut the cap sl1eet inlo handleable
lengths (12' . 18' [3.66 m . 5.50 mil. lay the material out on the
rool and allow it 10 relax and Ralten. To accommodate a full width
sheet, apply a mopping of hot asphalt, appraximately 200F above
the EVT, at a nominal rate of 231bs. per square (1.1 kg/m'l. (The
higher temperature of aspholt maximizes the banding of the cop
sheet 10 the ply felts.) Then Rop the cap sheet inlo the hot asphalt.
On subsequent courses, the cap sheet is posifioned upside down,
directly over the sheet in the preceding course such that the side lap
area of the preceding sheet is exposed. Care should be taken 10
mainloin 2' (51 mm) side laps and 6' (152 mm) end laps. Asphalt
is applied in the same manner as before, making sure to also cover
the 2' (51 mmJ exposed side lap. Aspholt may also be applied 10
the exposed 'upside down' cap sheet, prior 10 'Ropping' it inlo the
hot aSPholt. The cap sheet must be firmly and uniformly set, without
voids, inlo the hot asphalt with all edges and laps well sealed.
Asphalt should meet the requirements of ASTM D 312. The contrac.
lor must provide a Schuller confirmafion number for asphalt on jobs
which require a Guarantee. Check with a Schuller Technical Service
Specialist far special requirements in hot climates.
