No.: Type of Inspection: Soils Observation Weather: Clear Field Observations and Comments As requested, a PSI soils representative met on-site wltn the owner and Essex General Construction representative to observe soft areas of concern from excavation. The area of concern is the driveway and turn around "Hammerhead" intersection. Three test pits were excavated at approximately l' to 1 1/2' below finished sub9rade. The first test pit was on the south side of the driveway, At finished subgrade the soil appeared to be a medium stiff gray clay. The test pit was excavated an additional foot to reveal a silty clay material that was stiff. Surface Pocket Penetrometer readings ranged from 1 to 3 tons per square foot (tsf). The material appeared to be very firm and stable. Two additional test pits were excavated that revealed a more sandy clay material. Pocket Penetrometer readings ranged from 0.5 to 1,0 tsf. The owner stated that only RV's weighing 20,000 to 30,000 pounds would be driven on these areas. It was agreed that the gray fat clay would be removed and that the proofroll would be conducted later on this afternoon to look at more of the area exposed. To the best of our knowledge, the work inspected above was in accordance with the building deoartment approved desiqn drawinq, specifications and PSI Geotechnical Report 722.65012-2 dated March 10,2006. No.: Type of Inspection: Soils Observation Weather: Overcast Field Observations and Comments AM As requested, a PSI representative was on.site to observe proofrolling at the south end of the pad in the parking lot area. The area measured 40' x 40'. To assist us in determining the stability of in-place soils, a fully loaded dual axle dump truck weighing approximately 48,000 pounds was utilized. PSi observed little to no deflection, rutting or pumping indicating a firm and stable subgrade at this time. Pocket Penetrometer readings ranged from 2.0 to 2.5 tsf and soil probe penetrations ranged from 3 to 6 inches. PM Returned to observe another proofroll on exposed subgrade for parking Jot and driveway pavement areas (see attached site plan). Proofroll performed using a fully loaded tandem axle dump truck weighing about 48,000 pounds. No deflections were observed under the wheel loads and only slight wheel tracking occurred indicating a firm, stable subgrade. To assist us in determining the stability of the in-place soils, the proofroll was conducted using a single axle dump truck weighing approximately 35,000 pounds (fully loaded). Due to access, the larger tandem axle trucks were not used. No deflections (pumping) were observed under the wheel loads and only shallow wheel tracking occurred, indicating a relatively firm, stable subgrade at this time, After each proofroll, the contractor immediately began to cover with crushed rock to protect from the rain. Some defiections were observed under the wheel loads and wheel tracking up to six inches in depth occurred, indicating a soft subgrade. The single axle dump truck also got stuck in one location. Recommended that the area south of the proposed building (approximately 30 feet easVwest by 48 feet north/south) be over excavated six inches and geotextile fabric placed over the exposed subgrade soil. The proofrolls were conducted using a fully loadec single axle dump truck weighing approximately 35,000 pounds. No defiections (pumping) were observed under the wheel loads and only slight wheel tracking (rutting) occurred, indicating a relatively firm, stable, subgrade except for the following area: an area measuring approximately 17 feet easVwest by 42 feet northlsouth on the south side of proposed building pad. At this location, deflections were visible under the wheel loads and wheel tracking up to 4 inches in depth occurred. These observations were similar to observations noticed during yesterday's proofroll on the south side of the building pad. Recommended over excavating the area 6 inches and placing geotextile fabric prior to placing the crushed rock. No,: Type of Inspection: Soils Observation Weather: Partly Cloudy. 360 Field Observations and Comments AM On-site to observe exposed subgrade for the west half of the proposed building pad. At the time of our site visit the contractor had used the excavator with a smooth bladed bucket to remove the existing fill material up to 3 feet in thickness. The relatively undisturbed soil appeared to be red-brown sandy silt as described in our geotechnical report dated March 10, 2006. To assist us in determining the stability of the subgrade, a proofroll was conducted using a loaded tandem axle dump truck weighing approximately 45,000 pounds. No deflections were observed under the wheel loads and only slight wheel tracking occurred, indicating a relatively firm and stable subgrade at this time. PM Returned to the site to observe subgrade soils for the east half of the proposed building pad. The subgrade appeared relatively firm and stable under the weight of the tandem axle dump truck. The area is to receive up to 2 feet of crushed rock fill. Scheduled for compaction testing tomorrow at 2:30 PM.
