Re: Inspection and Certification of Lateral Force Bracing
for Suspended Ceiling System, Albertson's in
Springfield, Oregon.
Per your instructions, I have inspected the ceiling
construction at the Albertson's Store in Springfield. Elva
Duvall, the project superintendent, and I removed ceiling
tiles to inspect the details of the ceiling suspension
system and bracing. The ceiling suspension system is the
USG/Donn DXL system which you provided me the printed
technical specifications for my calculations.
The lateral force bracing system of wires and struts are
spaced 12 feet on center each way per specifications. The
typical vertical support wire system is spaced 4 feet on
center along the main support tees per specifications.
Tom Marks, the Springfield building inspector, indicated
that the four wires at each strut location were not sloped
at an angle of 450 from the plane of the ceiling as required
by the specifications, therefore the system is unacceptable.
The specifications permit substantiating design calculations
to support alternatives. I have investigated the UBC Design
requirements under seismic forces and lateral force design.
Actual ceiling and fixture weight approximates 2 psf, the
seismic code requires a minimum 4 psf for design. Actual
horizontal force per strut section was computed at 86.4
pounds using the 4 psf minimum. UBC design requirements
also require a minimum design of 200 pounds for each bracing
wire. Calculated values using code minimums are 122# at
450, 170# at 600 and 203# at 650 the approximate worst case
in the ceiling layout.

Re: Inspection and Certification of Lateral Force Bracing
for Suspended Ceiling System, Albertson's in
Springfield, Oregon.
January 26, 1990
Based upon the design of the roof framing system by others
of trusjoist members spaced 4 feet on center between glulam
girders, the variable height between roof surface and
ceiling line, the attachments are extended to the joist
lines as constructed. There is no Code system that is
permitted to install an additional support framing system at
the roof line permitting the 450 alignment of the suspension
wires.
Based upon the details as constructed, calculations to check
actual and Code minimum loads and forces, values permitted
by the manufacturer's suspension system, I certify that the
lateral force bracing system in place will support and
resist all lateral force requirements of the 1990 edition of
the State of Oregon Specialty Code.
