'Scrappers' are now being used to cut and remove existing materials to near designated finished subgrade elevation. 'Cats' are being used to make final cut to subgrade. Contractor was advised to minimize heavy equipment travel in building area and to avoid repetitive passes over the same route. Stability of exposed sub grade in west third of warehouse was checked by proof-roll using a loaded double"axle dump truck weighing approximately 42,000 pounds. Very minor to moderate deflection and tracking was visible under the wheel loads, due in"part to the moisture content of the soils and the compression of the disturbed surface materials. I Placement of imported clean bar-run gravel began in I west third of building area in mid-AM and continued throughout the day. Material is being spread in lifts and compacted with single 36" drum self propelled vibratory roller. Compaction levels will be verified by proof roll after initial lifts are completed. Contractor was advised to keep truck traffic only in ' areas with sufficient fill in-place to prevent disturbance to subgrade. Excavation of swale west of press area is in-progress. Logs, stumps, wood debris, saturated and unstable materials are being encountered and removed off-site. ... .,:::..::... S incerel y , A,~~. Michael L. John Tyler (Chambers) requested recommendations for construction in swale area east of press and east roadway for figuring quantities and cost estimates. Advised Mr. Tyler that swale in building areas should cleared of all unsuitable materials as is being done west of press area, and that roadway area may not need quite as much excavation, but could not be fully addressed until excavation begins in thaI area. Meyer, Manager Eugene Branch c: Shorewood Packaging - Bob Reeves Boucher Moucka Larson Architects Chambers Construction City of Springfield c:\wpSl \reports\insp\Sho54656.Sho REPORT Contractor is continuing tree and topsoil removal in building area. Met with Chambers and Egge representatives and Charles Lane (Braun) to discuss and observe existing conditions in swale area. After observing excavation of a test pit and dewatering an area on the west side of the press area, Mr. Lane recommended removal of all unsuitable materials (trees, stumps, wood debris and soft, s~turated soils) to stable native silts andlor gravels. (Mr. Lane's site visit will be documented on a separate report). Other items discussed include subgrade protection, fill placement and compaction operations. . Also, based on information received, it is our understanding that no matter what present elevations are, a minimum of 12" of topsoil is to be removed and a minimum of 3 feet of imported fill materials is to be placed in the building area.' Meyer; Manager Eugene Branch c: Shorewood Packaging - Bob Reeves Chambers Construction City of Springfield Bouchka Moucka Larson Architects REPORT Met on-site with contractor's "representatives (Chambers Construction and Egge Sand & Gravel) to review anticipated sitework operations and procedures. Presently, a staging area is being developed between the future office area of the building and International Way. Based on the on-site conversations and the anticipated pad development procedures, a test pit was excavated in the existing swale area near the south warehouse building line to determine the stability and competency of the existing materials. Loose silts, wood debris, root systems and saturated clays were encountered. A high volume of groundwater flow was located approximately 2.5' below the existing grade of 420.0'.. All parties present were advised that the materials encountered do not appear suitable for support of the building pad. Based on the response from the contractor's, this advise is contrary to what was originally anticipated I for construction on the existing materials. It was determined that the project soils engineer should visit the site and a meeting was set up for February 27, 1995. ' c:\wp51 \reports\insp\ShoS4648.Sho
