Subject: Springfield Buildiflg Permit COM2008-00804 Jasper Meadows subdivision--Lot 237 - S7lf~ 5748 Mineral Way-Springfield, OR Foundation Soils I'YIt"ft'O\.l J. / PURPOSE AND SCOPE At your request, K & A Engineering, Inc. has completed a geotechnical investigation of the existing SOils on the subject property. Our undefstanding is that a wood-framed single-family residence supported by a cast-In- place concrete spread footing foundation is Pfoposed for construction on this site. The purpose of our investigation was to determine the suitability of the soils for construction ot the proposed structure, and provide recommendations for construction of the foundation. The scope of our selVices is limited to general suitability with respect to bearing capacity and expansive soils. FOUNDATION PAD PREPARATION The project site is located on a residential lot in the Jasper Meadows subdivision in the northwest corner of the . Mineral Way/South 57. Place intersection. The lot is mostly level and there are no apparent slope movement hazards. The original ground surface is low lying and is poorly drained. . Based on the foundation pad excavation, native soils consist of approximately 8 to 16-inches of dafk brown/black, moist, moderately stiff, organic silt, over gray/orange, wet, moderately stiff, plastic ciay mixed with decomposed sandstone Foundation preparation involved constructing a level foundation pad on a subgrade consisting of native undisturbed soils. This required excavating and removing approximately 8 to 16-inches of dark brown organic silt from the foundation pad area. After the excavation and removal of the unsuitable soils, approximately 1.5 to 25-feet of "i<-inchminus dense graded crushed aggregate was placed, graded, and compacted on the foundation pad. This selVed to provide a uniform surface for footing construction at the desired elevation. The fill materials were placed and then compacted using a vibratory steel drum roller. We tested the in-place density of the 'I.-inch minus dense graded crushed aggregate fill and have determined that the average dry density exceeds 95-percent of maximum as determined by ASTM 0698 The field lest results are attached to this report. Jun.26. 2008 9:02AM No. 2637 P 3/13 ;. K & A Engineering, Inc. SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS The project site, as prepared, is suitable to support the proposed foundations. We recommend a design allowable bearing capacity of 2,OOO.pounds per square foot The soils present a moderate Shrink/swell hazard. Foundation loads should bear on undisturbed native silts a minimum depth of 36-inches below final grade around the perimeter foundation. The prepared foundation pad meets these recommendations. Final grading around the foundation pad should raise the grade above the foundation using native or imported silts and should slope away Ifom the foundation. We recommend approval of the foundation pad, as constructed, by the building official. Thank you for the opportunity to be of service. Please call us if you have questions or need further assistance.
