C<>;,I<= "" u, "" April 28, 2000 RECEIVED - 4/ 28-0{J FROM RE: Springfield Chamber or"Commerce Executive Committee Members ' Dan Egan, Executive Dire'ctor , Proppsed Ordinance/Springfield Drinking Water Protection' , AN UPDATE ' By~ TO :rh" Drinking Water Task Force met at Springfield City Hall last night to review the latest version of the proposed ordinance, It'was a good discussion, ofthe changes made thus far. Some of the con'tpanies potentially impacted attended the meeting, and discussed the ordinance with myselt; committ.ee members, and city stafI after the 'meeting, There is still some ,work to be done on the langu, age and clarity of the ordinance, but there has been significant progress made in ,getting to a point where existing businesses (and our members) can live with and abide by,the' spirit and letter of this ordin, mce, ' ' On Monday, May I, the City Council will again consider this ordinance in a first reading of the ordinance, That means it will not be considered for adoption that evening, but will be most, likely considered at the second, readingat a'time in the near fbture, On behalf of the Chainber, I feel ,comfortable testifying to the following points: . '1, Steady progress is being made to make the ordinance good for protection of well water ' and good for existing businesses, , 2, There is still work to be done, but itis work that can be accomplished, 3, The Chamber remains confident that a final adqpted ordinance will and should allow existing businesses to remain in Springfield and work their business plans for the future, 4, That the legitimate concerns of impacted businesses has lead to and will produce a much better, more defined ordinance that will serve both residents and businesses into the, far future, ' It has been my obserVation that all parties involved have worked hard to reach a final positive , outcome, I believe it is the ChalJlber's role to continue to encourage thilt collaboration as the issues move through sometimes complex details that make up the ordinance'language, Please call the Chaniber office if you have any questions or input on this issue or the Chamber's roie to this point, ' , ' Have A Great Weekend!
