HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 04 Springfield Education Day Proclamation 225 FIFTH STREET SPRINGFIELD, OR 97477 (541) 726-3700 FAX (541) 726-2363 PROCLAMATION "SPRINGFIELD EDUCATION DAY" WHEREAS, the Springfield Board of Education presents Springfield Education Day as a celebration of thriving community involvement in our schools and for honoring all community members who have contributed time and effort into ensuring student success in our schools; and WHEREAS, the keynote event of Springfield Education Day is the Gift of Literacy, a program made possible through partnership. This project promotes a love of reading and encourages young children to read by providing a new, hardbound book, bag, and bookmark to every first-grade student in Springfield Public Schools. Research shows that early literacy interventions in the life of a child are directly related to instilling positive values in children and encouraging them to be lifelong readers and learners; and WHEREAS, the Springfield and Twin Rivers Rotary clubs proposed the Gift of Literacy and their partnership and the support of other community partners have made this event possible. The partners of TEAM Springfield: City of Springfield, Springfield Public Schools, Springfield Utility Board and Willamalane Park & Recreation District, have played an integral role in funding and encouraging this event; and WHEREAS, community involvement should be celebrated, as it is important to instilling positive values in our students and encouraging them to be life-long learners. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sidney Leiken, Mayor of Springfield, do hereby declare May 31, 2007 as Springfield Education Day. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I HAVE HERE SET MY HAND, THIS DAY, AND HAVE CAUSED THE SEAL TO BE AFFIXED HERETO. SIDNEY LEIKEN Mayor of Springfield
