PROCLAMATION
"SPRINGFIELD EDUCATION DAY"
WHEREAS, the Springfield Board of Education presents Springfield
Education Day as a celebration of thriving community involvement in our
schools and for honoring all community members who have contributed time
and effort into ensuring student success in our schools; and
WHEREAS, the keynote event of Springfield Education Day is the Gift of
Literacy, a program made possible through partnership. This project promotes
a love of reading and encourages young children to read by providing a new,
hardbound book, bag, and bookmark to every first-grade student in Springfield
Public Schools. Research shows that early literacy interventions in the life of a
child are directly related to instilling positive values in children and
encouraging them to be lifelong readers and learners; and
WHEREAS, the Springfield and Twin Rivers Rotary clubs proposed the
Gift of Literacy and their partnership and the support of other community
partners have made this event possible. The partners of TEAM Springfield: City
of Springfield, Springfield Public Schools, Springfield Utility Board and
Willamalane Park & Recreation District, have played an integral role in funding
and encouraging this event; and
WHEREAS, community involvement should be celebrated, as it is
important to instilling positive values in our students and encouraging them to
be life-long learners.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sidney Leiken, Mayor of Springfield, do hereby
declare May 31, 2007 as Springfield Education Day.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I HAVE HERE SET MY HAND, THIS DAY, AND HAVE
