Observed subgrade soil in column footing excavations on line C for new covered
pedestrian walkway on 09-12-08, Footing excavations typically extended :t 3'-4'
below the surrounding parking lot grades. Exposed subgrade conditions generally
consist of medium stiff to stiff silty clay with some to trace sand. Footing at the east
end exposed clayey gravel with some silt at the base of the excavation: Soil in
base of all footings is firm and relatively undisturbed, Therefore, we indicated that
subgrade was adequate for placement of leveling course of compacted crushed
rock. We understand that footings were designed using a bearing pressure of 1500
psf and lateral resistance of 150 psf. Recommended' that the contractor use
compacted granular fill for back filling around the completed foundations. Also,
recommend that back fill required against the footings be compacted to a minimum
of 92% reiative compaction according to ASTM D698.
Adam Hughes (Brown Contracting) was advised and was asked to notify our office
when additional services are needed.
