S t:"7 Foundation Soils I '\ (iJ ,/ L <? -/<1'6''l( PURPOSE AND SCOPE At your request, K & A Engineering, Inc, has completed a geotechnical investigation of the existing soils on the subject property. Our understanding is that a wood-framed single-family residence supported by a cast-in. place concrete spread footing'foundation is proposed for cDnstruction on this site. The purpDse Df ourinvestigatiDn was to determine the SUitability of the sDils for construction of the propDsed structure, and provide recommendatiDns for cDnstructiDn of the fDundatiDn. The scope Df our services is limited to general suitability with respect to bearing capacity and expansive soils, FOUNDATION PAD PREPARATION The project site is located on a residential lot in the Jasper Meadows SUbdivision on the southwest corner of the Mineral Way and South 57'" Place intersection, The lot has a very gentle(l to 4-percent) west-facing slope. There is nD apparent slope movement hazard. The original ground surface was low lying and poorly drained. . . Based on the fDundation pad excavatron, native soils consist Df approximately 1 tD 2-feet of brown, dry, IDDse; organic silt, over multicolored, damp, moderately stiff. plastic clay with inclusions of decomposed sandstone There is a small amDunt Df fill Dn SDme areas Df the site as a resultDf it,being side-cast during the construction. . of the subdivisiDn infrastructure. . . r F6undation support preparation involved constructing a level foundation pad on a subgrade consisting of,nati~e . undisturbed soils. This required excavating and removing approximately 1 tD 2,5-feet of side-cast fill and;) Drganic silt to reach gray plastic clay and decDmposed sandstone in the foundation pad area, After the excavation and removal of. the unsuitable soils, approximately 2 to 4-feet of "pit-run" was placed, graded, and compacted in the foundation pad area, The "pit-run" consists of well graded silty crushed quarry stone wifh crushed rock up to approximately 3-inches, An approximately 4 to 10-inch lift of '1,-inch minus dense graded crushed aggregate was thimplaced, graded, and compacted over the'''pit-run'' fill. This served 10 provide a uniform surface for footing construction at the desired elevation. The fill materials were cDmpacted using a vibratorysteeld rum 'rOller.. Sep 9 2008 n7PM No. 2775 P 3 . K & A EnginBering, Inc. We tested the in-~Iace density of the 'I,-inch minus dense graded crushed 'aggregate fill and have determined that the average dry density exceeds 95-percent of maximum as determined by ASTM D698, The field test' results are attached to this.report. SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS The project site, as prepared, is suitable to support the proposed foundations We recommend a design allowable bearing capacity of 2,000-pounds per square foot ' The soils present a moderate shrinkjswellhazard. Foundation loads should bear on undisturbed native clay and decomposed sandstone a minimum depth of 36-inches below final grade around the perimeter foundation. The prepared foundation pad meets these recommendations, Final grading around the foundation pad should raise the grade above the foundation using native or imported sills and should slope away from the foundation. ' We recommend approval of the foundation pad, as constructed, by the building official.
