Foundation Soils 51 '3 [1 - ( 1{~3 , \ PURPOSE AND SCOPE At yoyr request, K & A Engineering, Inc. has completedageotechnicai'invesligation of the existing soils on the subject property, Our understanding is that a wood-framed single-family residence supported by a cast-in- ' place concrete spread tooting foundation is proposed for construction on this site, ... ~ "' The purpose' of our investigation was to determine the suitability of the soils.tor construction of the propo~ed . structure, and provide recommendations for construction of the foundation, The scope of our services is limited . '.\ to general suitability with respect to bearing capacity and expansive soils. .). ' FOUNDATION PAO PREPARATION Jl . . . . The project site is located on a residential lot in the Jasper Meadov.:s subdivision on the south side ot Mineral Way. There are no apparent slope movement hazards. The original ground sur1ace was low lying and poorly drained "h ' . .~ \\, ,-' .. I' . Based on a nearby foundation pad excavation, native' soils consist of approximately 1 to 2-feet of brown, dry, loose, organic silt, over multicolored, damp, moderately stiff, plastic sandy clay and decomposed sandstone. . There is some fill on some areas of the site as a result of it being side-cast during the construction of.the , 'subdivision infrjstruct~re . " ..,:>..;. p- Foundation support preparation involved constructing a level foundation pad on a subgrade consisiing of < :SUitable native und'isturbed soils, This requir~d excavating and removing the organic silt and side-cast fill to reach gray plastic clay and decomposed sandstone in the foundation p,ad area, After the excavation and removal of the u'nsuitable sails, "pit-run" was placed, graded, and compacted in the foundation pad area. The- "pit-run' consists otwell-graded Silty crushed quarry stone with crushed rock up to approximately 3-inches, 'I.-inch minus dense graded crushed aggregate was then placed, graded, and compacted over the "piHun" fill. This served to provide. a uniform surtace for footing construction at the desired elevation. The fill materials were compacted using a vibratory steel drum roller. K & A Engineering, inc, did not witness the subgrade or piacement of the fill soils. . , .,..'.... <. ': ." ':f ", .Sep.30 2008 . 138PM No.2816 P 6/28 K & A Engineering, Inc. We tested the in-place density 01 the %'inch minus dense graded crushed aggregatefilland have determined that the average dry density exceeds 95-percent of,maximum as determined by ASTM D698. The field test results are attached to this report SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATlDNS . . '. . The project site, 'as prepared, is suitable to support the proposed fo'undations. We recommend a design allowable bearing capacity of 2,OOO-pounds per square foot The soils present a moderate shrink/swell hazard. Foundation loads should bear on undisturbed native clay and decomposed sandstone a minimum depth 01 36-inches below final grade around the perimeter foundation Final grading around the foundation pad should raise the grade above the foundation. using native .or imported . silts and should slope aivayfrorn the foundation. We recommend approval of Ihe'foundalion pad, as construcled, by the building official. Thank you for the opportunity to be of service, Please call us if you have questions or need further assistance.
