Springfield , City of Springfield Building Permit Application No. 971463 Special Inspection of South Exterior CMU Wall Dear Kevin, This letter will confirm our telephone conversation of December 30th regarding the special inspection of the south exterior CMU wall of the subject building. . The building code requires "special inspection" of CMU walls when the design stresses in a wall exceeds 50% of the allowable stress, The design stresses in the south exterior wall of your building exceed 50% of the allowable, therefore special inspection is required, This requirement was noted on the approved plans, It has come to my attention that the bottom 4 feet of the south wall was grouted before being special inspected . by an approved agency. While this is unfortunate, the wall will still be in compliance with the requirements of the building code if you insure that the remainder of the wall is specially inspected prior to grouting. The stresses in the bottom 4 feet of the wall do not exceed 50% of the allowable stresses because the maximum stresses are caused by bending in the wall, and those stresses reach a maximum value at the mid- , height of the wall. Because the bottom 4 feet of the wall is stressed to less than 50% of the allowable, special inspection of this portion of the wall is not required. Please give me a call if you have any questions.
