What experiences / training / qualifications do you have for this particular board / commission / committee? I am a veteran educator of 22 years. In that capacity I have attended trainings on equity and understand how crucial that work is to my teaching: for all students to be seen, valued and heard, in addition to the necessity of actively dismantling systems that have historically been used to do the opposite. This applies to this committee because it is a lens through which police work must be viewed for all community members to feel safe and be served. 2. What specific contribution do you hope to make? I hope to help facilitate increased transparency between the SPD and our community, and advocate both for more accountability for officer's behavior as well as recruitment of more representative officers to become a true reflection of our community, which I believe will lead to a change in the culture of the SPD overall, because it will involve a more diverse set of perspectives. 3. Briefly describe your involvement in relevant community groups and activities. (Lack of previous involvement will not necessarily disqualify you from consideration.) I participated in a "Coaching for Equity" book group this Spring, training teachers to coach colleagues in reflecting on their current practices, ways they may be perpetuating inequity for under -served populations of students, and what strategies can be used to remove those roadblocks to success for those students. Currently I am involved in a book group studying anti -racist curriculum planning, and serving as equity representative on the Operations Committee at Churchill High School. 4. What community topics concern you that relate to this board / commission / committee? Why do you want to become a member? I'm concerned about transparency, accountability and the policing culture in Springfield. I'm concerned that there are members of our community who do not feel served by the SPD, but rather targeted and intimidated. I am invested in this community I call home. and want to become a member because I can be, for those who want to be, but can't, or for those who don't know to be, I can. To advocate for the voices that are too often left out of the conversation. 5. Most boards / commissions / committees meet monthly. Subcommittees may meet more frequently. What experiences / training / qualifications do you have for this particular board / commission / committee? In my career I have had a fair amount of experience in strategic planning and operational development. Given that the Police Advisory Committee is interested in community input in long-term planning, I believe I am well-suited to assist through my prior work. I have additional history in managing quality improvement, compliance, and training all of which I believe would allow me to provide a valuable voice to this committee. 2. What specific contribution do you hope to make? Over the last several years, justice reform has become a top focus across the nation and communities have had to react, assess, and reevaluate myriad areas of their organizations and respond appropriately. As a community member who is deeply invested in the safety and wellbeing of our city, I am desirous to contribute my skillset as well as my passion for the issues this committee oversees. 3. Briefly describe your involvement in relevant community groups and activities. (Lack of previous involvement will not necessarily disqualify you from consideration.) Having been in Springfield for the last 4+ years, l have engaged in various community organizations through my work in healthcare and outside of it. At the onset of the pandemic, I assisted my organization in establishing a robust incident command structure to ensure continued patient care for our communities. Additionally, (though not entirely relevant to this committee), I am an active volunteer in Springfield with Hearts for Hospice and Lane County with Wiggly Tails Dog Rescu 4. What community topics concern you that relate to this board / commission / committee? Why do you want to become a member? What experiences / training / qualifications do you have for this particular board / commission / committee? My family moved throughout the south frequently as my father was a non-profit contractor on military installations. This afforded me an opportunity to view LEDs and their relationships with their communities in nearly a dozen low-income communities. Additionally, I worked as a security guard throughout undergrad & grad school to pay for my education. Through this position I learned a tremendous amount about LEO structure. Additionally, I minored in criminal justice. 2. What specific contribution do you hope to make? I hope to bridge the gap between our local policing and the citizens of Springfield's lower-income & more diverse areas. Having been here for 3 years I have seen the drastic shift that our local LEO is seeking to make. However, I believe more can be done to connect with the citizenry in a way that makes those efforts seem more genuine. I would work to connect in a way that was accountable for the past while recognizing the opportunity for growth and improvement. Briefly describe your involvement in relevant community groups and activities. (Lack of previous involvement will not necessarily disqualify you from consideration.) My position at UO affords me with the opportunity to work closely with LEOs representing UOPD & EPD in an effort to resolve community issues related to our students. Additionally, I volunteer as a member of the following groups/committees at UO: Veteran's Advisory Committee, First Generation Student Working Group, Campus Planning Committee. Additionally, I collaborate frequently with our Black Cultural Center and advise several Culturally -Based student orgs. 4. What community topics concern you that relate to this board / commission / committee? Why do you want to become a member? Community policing and relationship building.
