Artisan Engineering has completed a structural analysis of the existing upper level
walkway belm at the apartment buitding at 1491sth Street in Springfield. We performed
the work per your request yesterday to determine if a post can be removed from under
the walkway edge support beam. We based the analysis on the information that you
brought to our office.
Re Check Existing Walkway Support Beam at 1491 sth St in Springfield for Post
Removal
Dear Robert:
The existing 6-foot wide walkway is supported by posts that are spaced at 48-inches on
center. One of these posts is to be removed to facilitate alter-abled access into a ground
floor apartment.
It appears that the edge beam is either a 4xB or larger. This should be verified by
removal of the soffit trim material. lf the existing edge beam is not at least a 4x8, or if it is
spliced at the post to be removed, or if the Contractor doesn't want to disturb the existing
trim for inspection then I recommend additional posts and a new 4x8 beam be installed
under the existing edge beam.
Please refer to the attached calculations, elevation sketch, and details for our analysis
and recommendations. We checked the deck support beam for a 50 psf live load and a
point Ioad from the roof framing with a snow load of 25 psf.
