In conjunction vith the construction of the metropoli tan t''astevater treatment
plant and subsequent improvemeri;-i; ipringfield's sanitary sel'er systems' the
6ii, ru"t also ""ur" ceitain repa-irs to be made to private sanitary sever
.V.i"tt. There are tvo primary reasons for this action:
1) Many defects exist in the pri'.'ate sever system r'rhich a1lov storm vater to
enter the sanitary sever. As a i"sutt, mi]Iitns of gallons of r:ater that should
not be entering the sanitary sever must be treated ai a great expense to the
users of this facilitY'
2) Many of the problems that exist in the private sanitary sever system are
real or potenti.i';;;i;[ fr"r.rJ.. Broken slver laterals not only a11ov storm
vater to enter the sani,"ty ,"r!r, Uui tfr"V also a1lov rav sevage- to escape into
the ground. rn-"Jaiiion, 'faulty-t""gt.or.irain vents may also allov toxic or
expl6sive sever gases to enter into building'
Recently, several segments of the City's sanitary sever-system vere smoke tested
to locate pot"nii"f f,roblem areas. Tire tests on-specific leq1lnts of the City's
sever system, "iro-rlr"a1ed thai the private sanitary sever and/or plumbing
drainage system serving youf-p.op"tty'eontains defects' The defect(s) are
listed in the attachment. pfe"sl-not"-it"t, depending.on the type of.d-efect' it
is nor alvays p;;;i-b1; io sp""ilt ilr;-exact'deflct or its exact location' For
example, vherea!-=rof." testing ,ly-ii"t" inalcatea a leak in the sever lateral'
there may be ""r"i"f ""u.", t6r iir" leak. There may- also be- several defects in
the same sever 1ine. In these cases, although ve vill be able to suggest a
probable cause ind location, "nJ-oii". .s ,uIh other information as ve have
available, it vill be up to you (or a contractor hired by you) to locate and
correct the deficiencies'
