In conjunction vith the c6nstruction of the metropolitan uastevater treatment
plant and subsequent improveme"i;-i; ipringfield'i sanitary sever systens' the
6i;t-r;;i also ".u=" c"itain repairs t6 !e made to private sanitary sever
;y;i";;. There are tvo primary reasons for this action:
1) Many defects exist in the pri';ate sever system vhich allov storm vater to
enter the sanitary sever. As a i"iu1t, mi11i-ons of gallons of vater that should
not be entering the sanitary sever must be treated ai a great expense to the
users of this facilitY'
2) Many of the problems that exist in the private sanitary sever system are
real or potentiai-i,eaftn hazards. Broken sLver laterals not only ?11?:^:::tT-
vater to enter the sanitary sever, but they also a1lov rav sevage to escape into
the ground. fn-"Jaiilon, iaulty-i"r"t.or.drain vents nay also a1lov toxic or
expl5sive sever gases to enter into building'
Recently, several segments of the city's sanitary sevel.system vere smoke tested
to locate potential problem areas. TLe tests on-specific segments of the City's
sever system, "iro-tlvealed thai-the private sanitiry sever and/or plumbing
drainage system serving youl-ptop"ity'contains defecis' The defect(s) are
listed in the attachment. pf".s!-noie tfrat, de-pending.on the type of.defect' it
is not alvays p;;;ilI; io.p""ii, it" "*"ct'defect or its exact location' For
example, "herea!-;;;k" testing ,'"y f,"r". indicated a leak in the sever lateral'
there may be ""r"i"i ""u=", f6t"'iir"--f""t. There may- also be- several defects in
the same sever 1i;;. In these cases, although ve vill be able to suggest a
probable cause ind location, .nJ-oii". as ,uEh other information as ve have
available, it viII be up to you (or a contractor hired by you) to locate and
correct the deficiencies'
