In conjunction vith the construction of the metropolitan vastevater treatment
plant and subsequent improvement;-i; Springfield'i sanitary sever systems' the
EiiV rr.t also i"us" ceitain repairs tb be-made to private sanitary sever
;t;i";;. There are tvo primary reasons for this action:
1) Many defects exist in the private sever system vhich alIov storm vater to
enter the sanitary sever. As a iesult, millibns of gallons of vater that should
not be entering the sanitary sever must be treated ai a great expense to the
users of this facilitY.
2) Many of the problems that exist in the private sanitary sever system are
real or potentiai-health hazards. Broken slrer laterals not only allov storm
vater to enter the sanitary sev;;, Uri if'"y also allov rav sevage- to escape into
the ground. ln-"Jaiiion, faulty-i"r"t or.drain vents may also a1lov toxic or
expl6sive sever gases to enter into building'
RecentIy, several segments of the City's sanitary sever-system vere smoke tested
to locate pot"nii.f f,roblem areas. tire tests on-specific segments of the City's
seuer system, "i.o-.!u"a1ed thai the private sanitiry sever and/or plumbing
drainage system serving your-property'contains defects' The defect(s) are
listed in the attachment. pfe.s!-noi"-it"t, depending.on the type of.defect' it

the same sever 1i;;. In these cases, although ve vilI be able to suggest a

available, it vil] be up to you (or a contractor hired by you) to loeate and
correct the deficiencies'
