BRANCH ENGINEB.ING INC. PRoJECT No. 2O.O2O
Branch Engineering, Inc. (BEI) geotechnical engineering staff visited the above referenced site on
January 7, 2O2O to assess the subgrade soil and the placement of structural aggregate fill for the
construction of a level building pad to support a foundation for a residential addition. The site
subgrade soil consists of moist, brown silty clay and probing with a steel hand probe indicated a
medium stiff consistency of the subgrade soil. The foundation excavation was advanced
approximately l2-inches below ground surface around the perimeter of the addition area and
covered with approximately 2-inches to 3-inches of compacted aggregate. A representative
sample of the subgrade soil was collected for Free Swell (IS 2720) testing and results indicate a
shrink/swell potential of 30% which is considered to be low to moderate.
The building pad preparation is suitable for a conventional perimeter-style foundation, and an
allowable soil bearing capacity of 1,500 psf. The low to moderate shrink/swell potential of the
subgrade soil is mitigated by the placement of the compacted aggregate. We recommend that the
foundation perimeter be backfilled and graded to slope away from the structure as soon as
concrete curing allows. Footing drains are not required due to the relatively flat topography
surrounding the site. Permanent surface drainage shall be established to convey water to a
suitable disposal area. Final perimeter landscape grades shall slope away from the foundation
and surface water shall not be allowed to pond adjacent to the foundation.
Sincerely,
Branch Engineering Inc,
GIN
