In con3unction r^,ith the construction of the metropolitan vastei'ater treatment
plant and subsequent improveme"i;-i; Springfield'i sanitary se!'er systems' the
[iiy ru.t a1so."u." ceitain repairs tb be made to private sanitary sever
;t;'r";=. th"r" are tvo primary reasons for this action:
1) l,iany defects exist in the private sever system r"hich a]lor'r storm vater to
enter the sanitary sever. As a r"=uft, miLlitns of gallons of vater that should
not be entering the sanitary Sever must be treated ai a great expense to the
users of this facilitY.
2) Many of the problems that exist in the private sanitary sever system are
real or potentiai health hazards. Broken slver laterals not only i11::^:::tT-
vater to enter the sanitary sever, but they also allov rav sevage to escape lnto
the ground. f"'"aaiiion, t.uftr-.";;;.or.drain vents may also allov toxic or
expl6sive sever gases to enter into building'
Recently, several segmen_ts of the city's sanitary sever.system vere smoke tested
to focate potential problem areas. TLe tests on specific segments of the City's
sever system, "iro-rlu"a1ed thai the private sanitiry sever and/or plumbing
drainage system serving youf-ptop"ity'contains defects' The defect(s) are
listed in the attachment. pfeas!-note that, depending.on the tyPe of defect' it
is not alvays p;;;i'bi; io ,p""iiv irr"-"*"ct'defect or its exact location' For'
example, vhereai-rrot" testing ily--h;'; indicated a leak in the sever lateral'
there may be ="i"r.i "auses t6t"'ii'," f""t' There may- also be- several defects in
the same sever line. rn these cases, although ve vilr be able to suggest a
probable cause and tocation, "ni-Iitl.-.= ',It' other information as ve have
available, it vill be up to you (or a contractor hired by you) to locate and
correct the deficiencies'

DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT: During the smoke testing of-the sanitary sewersystem, ground smokg appeared at the base of the rear deck stels, whichmay be the result of a loose clean-out or a defective sewer connector tothe house drain.
Corrective action may require the replacementsewer line at this location or the repair of t a short section of theclean-out fitting.
