Dear Tom: The contractor has asked us to evaluate the pier footings constructed for the above residence, at the request of the City. He relates that he erroneously poured his concrete without having the steel reinforcing inspected. Since the pier footings are buried and any reinforcing quantities and locations are difficult to detect, we referred to the construction drawings to evaluate the footings as unreinforced elements. Calculations reveal that they will perform adequately, should the reinforcing have been omitted or improperly placed, with the exception of the center pier between the garage doors, which overloads the soil approximately 8% under full design loads. It is our opinion that this will have no noticeable effect on the performance of the structure. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our office.
