Dear [{r. Gregor:
.{t the request of several of your tenants, The Springfield Building SafetyDivision conducted an inspection of your property at the above address. Theinspection revealed several items of concern tvhich do not meet the minimumCity Housing Code Requirements, and need to be comected. They consist of the
foliorving:
Steps at most of Lhe units have been ropaired by the use of plywood overthe existing stair tread. This creates a safety hazard by changing therelative height of the stair risers (wertical distance between steps). The
)rousing code does not permit a difference greater than 3/8 inch betweenthe highest and the lowest risers in a stairway.
The wood steps are cieteriorating in many locations, including those rnen-
tioned in #1 above, and require repair or replacemenl.
Structural settlement has occurred under landings and stair stringers,
creating uneven surfaces in the following locations:a. Top landing and wood stair at unit #13-18 (The wood post and stringerare in direct contact with the ground, which contributes to the
condition).
b. The outside stair stringer at unit #9-10.c. The landing at urril #22-24.
4.Wood Supports are rotted or deteriorating rapidly in the following locations:a. Stair stringers at unit #13-18.b. Stair stringers at the right side of unit #E-Hc. Header is split at the top of the stair to unit #I-O.d. Ilandrail is leaning out at the front stair to unit #9-10.e. Header is rotted at the top of the front stair to unit #zz-24.f. Stair stringers are rotting and separating from the intermediateIanding of the front stair to unit #y-(B-z).
5.The handrail to unit #11 is missing a vertical rail, allowing an excessiveopening in the railing, which is potentially hazardous to children who may usethe stair.
