The hydric soils layer covers this entire property and according to the computer, the area of the addition is on a hillside so I will need a geo-tech/soils report. In addition to the soils report, I need the truss engineering. It's a small single story addition so loads and spans are minimal but it is a requirement that if engineered trusses are being used, I need the engineering calculations. Once I have those two items and there are no issues, I can approve the permit. Creswell, OR 97426 Re: Soils Evaluation, 508 Cascade Drive, Springfield, OR. Dear Ryan: 1NC. PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS LAND SURVEYORS BUILDING DESIGNERS 806 N. NINTH STREET COTTAGE GROVE, OREGON 97424 TELEPHONE: (541) 942-0126 FAX: (541) 942-7935 At your request, I visited the site referenced to determine the nature of in situ soils in preparation for construction of a closet addition to the existing home. The site slopes down from south to north at approximately 6%. Approximately 12" to 14" of topsoil fill has been placed in the area proposed for construction. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (MRCS) lists the soils at the site as Type 43C Dixonville-Philomath-Hazelair complex. These soils are an amalgamation of the individual soil types, therefore the soils can vary fairly significantly over the site. Based on our site visit and penetrometer testing we conservatively believe the soils to be silty clay loam from native grade to 6" to 14" below native grade, then cobbly silty clay from 24" to 36" depth with weathered bedrock below the silty clays. We note that no bedrock has been observed to a depth of as much as 46" in Hazelair soils. NRCS reports the soils at the site have a plasticity index of 35 to 50 and a mrdtmlinear .... extensibility of 6.5% with maximums found of 9.5%. The plasticity index indicates a hiih. • shrink/swellshrink/swell potential in the soils above bedrock. Depth to water table is listed as greater than 80 inches. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) lists the site as laving ••••e• strong shaking (3 of 6) during an earthquake event. No active faults are shownliut°he area. The DOGAMI site also lists the chance of landslides as very high (4 of 4). The cktTee,of ; • • • • liquefaction is listed as very low (0 of 3). • • • • Geomax probed the soils at 12" below native grade using an E-280 Pocket Penetrometer to determine soil bearing strength at footing elevation. Results show an estimated bearing strength of 1500 psf. The cobbly silty soils above bedrock are expansive and must have at least 30" of cover from bottom of footing or non -expansive gravel base to finish grade in order to mitigate variations in moisture and soil expansion. We recommend removing fill material to native soil and footings be designed for an allowable soil bearing strength of 1500 psf with a depth of base rock equal to at least V2 the width of the Sharkey Builders Soils Evaluation for Residential Construction T.L. 18-02-02-22-07300, Springfield, OR May 16, 2019 footings. No slope stabilty analysis was requested and none has been performed on this site. In light of the age of the home and evident stability of the home, we do not believe a slope study is merited in this case as the home is over 30 years old and the proposed addition is a relatively small walk- in closet. We recommend footing drains be installed at the bottom of the base rock and tied to existing footing drains at the rear of the home. If cuts of more than 4" are planned on this sloping site, we recommend additional testing and specific design for a retaining wall to avoid de -stabilizing the slope above the site. The scope of service for this work was limited by the Client to assessment of soils at the site. No other investigations or surveys including, but not limited to, those of a geo-technical nature, were authorized by the client and none have been performed. No slope stability evaluation was authorized and none was performed based on this investigation. This work was performed using methods of practice currently accepted by other professionals in this area with similar experience on projects of similar scope and complexity at the time of service. This report offers a professional opinion and no warranties, either expressed or implied are offered by Geomax, Inc.
