ITEM TITLE: SUSTAINABLE CITY YEAR PROGRAM FALL AND WINTER TERM

ISSUE
STATEMENT:
City Staff have been working with University of Oregon faculty and students to
complete work on multiple City projects as part of the Sustainable City Year
Program (SCYP) partnership. City Staff, in partnership with University staff, will
present final images and products from courses completed during Fall term.

DISCUSSION: The City of Springfield was selected by the University of Oregon to be the 2011-
2012 partner city in the University’s Sustainable City Year Program. The
partnership is a year-long collaboration between the City of Springfield and
University students from a number of disciplines including planning, architecture,
economics, journalism, law, and sustainable leadership. The student work is aimed
at focusing on existing City projects and analyzing, planning and setting goals for
moving those projects forward with a broader set of innovative ideas and concepts.
Staff will present a brief overview of final project and course deliverables
completed during the fall and winter terms. These projects will include;
• Springfield Public Library Designs
• Bicycle and Pedestrian Infrastructure Accessibility and Connectivity
• Mohawk Area Waremart Site Redevelopment
• Laura Street and Promise Neighborhoods Analysis
• City of Springfield ‘Adopt a Water-Way’ Outreach
• New K-8 School in Southeast Springfield
This presentation will also include a brief summary of those courses and
deliverables anticipated for Spring term.
