Citizen Involvement Program – Commercial Land Re-designation Project - The Commercial Lands Study (CLS), adopted February 2000, found that Springfield has a shortage of readily-developable commercially-zoned and designated sites, which limits our potential for economic growth and vitality. A look at the City’s development trends since adoption of the CLS indicated this problem still exists. In order to provide economic opportunities within the City of Springfield, and to foster economic growth, it is important that a marketable supply of commercial sites is available. The Commercial Lands Re-designations Project (Redesignation Project) will examine redesignating other land uses to commercial, look at the City’s land use regulations regarding commercial development, and our current commercial development patterns. The Redesignation Project implements several policies that were adopted in the CLS. The Redesignation Project provides several opportunities for citizen involvement through the Steering Committee and public open houses. The public will be kept informed of public hearings and meeting through advertisements in the Springfield News in accordance with the City’s adopted CIP guidelines. A Steering Committee is proposed to provide professional insight and expertise in the process. Staff is recommending that the Steering Committee be comprised of a Planning Commissioner, a Council Member, property and business owners, commercial real estate developers, and neighborhood organization leaders.
