Having been in the making for three yoars, the Springfield Sign Ordinance is a product
of the combined efforts of u special sign subcommittee formed by the Planning Commis-
sion, representatives of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, and the Springfield Com-
mittee for Citizen Involvement. A number of public hearings also occured for futher
citizen input. Then, as of January 1981, the Springfield City Council. udopted the new
Sign Ordinance. '
Section 9-7-21(4) of the Sign Ordinance requires specific ,violations to be corrected
by the sign owner or lessor when signs are potentially hazardous. Signs which have
electrical violations must be corrected by 30 days from the date of this notice.
As a result of the recent City-wide sign survey, the following violation was found on
your property relative to the one year compliance time limit:

Unless you are both the owner of the building and operator of the business, all elec-
trical corrections must be performed by a r'icensed electrical contractor.
By February 12, 1982 , the above referenced violation of the Springfield
Sign Ordinance must be corrected. Because the sign survey was completed in July of
1981, it is possible you have already taken steps to correct or have completed correc-
ting this violation. If this is the case, please contact this office as soon as pos-
sible. Your required corrections in the future may affect how you choose to perform
the currently required correction. By January 1, 1990, 9 years,from the date of adop-
tion of the Sign Ordinance, the following violations,must also be corrected:
1) Only 1 projecting sign per business occupancy is permitted.
2) The Main Street projecting sign a~tends into tho corner vision clearance area.
3) Readerboard or incidental signs are not permitted in the "downtown" sign district.

The Building Board of Appeals is empowered to hear and grant variances to the Sign
Ordinance, provided a written appeal is su~mitted to the Superintendent of Building
within 10 days of the date of receipt of this letter. The Board of Appeals may
grant a variance with regard to the unusual ,size, shape, or dimension of a site or
because of existing structures thereon in relation to a sign or its placement. The
Board of Appeals may NOT grant a variance based on economic hardship. ,~
For more detailed information regarding Sign Ordinance compliance, please contact the
Springfield Building Division at 726-3753. Permits, if needed, may also be applied
for at the Springfield Public Works Department, 225 North 5th Street. Your anticipa-
