HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 02 Purple Heart City ProclamationPurple Heart City Proclamation April 2018 WHEREAS, the Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in present use, and was initially created as the “Badge of Military Merit” by General George Washington in 1782; and WHEREAS, the Purple Heart was made available to the common soldier and is specifically awarded to any member of the United States Armed Services who has been wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the United States; and WHEREAS, the City of Springfield, Oregon has had numerous residents make the ultimate sacrifice in many of the world wars and has many residents that have been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat; and WHEREAS, veterans have paid the high price of freedom by leaving their families and communities and placing themselves in harm’s way for our country and for the good of all; and WHEREAS, the contributions and sacrifices of our men and women from Springfield who served in the Armed Forces have been vital in maintaining the freedoms and way of life enjoyed by our citizens; and WHEREAS, the City of Springfield is honored to become a Purple Heart City, and we appreciate the sacrifices our Purple Heart recipients have made in defending our freedoms. NOW THEREFORE, I, Christine L. Lundberg, Mayor of Springfield, Oregon do hereby proclaim Springfield, Oregon a Purple Heart City of Springfield and I encourage all citizens to honor and support our veterans for the sacrifices and contributions they have made to this great country. _________________________________ Christine L.
