Recognition of Sandra Rennie
Sandra Rennie was an Idaho native, but after her marriage to Gordon Rennie, moved to and
embraced Springfield as her home and community. She and Gordon had two children and six
grandchildren. Both were very active in the community through their work and volunteerism.
Sandra died on May 17, 2016 at the age of 85, in East Sound, Washington.
Sandra earned her major in Speech and Drama at the University of Oregon and used those skills
in every aspect of her life. She often referred to herself as a professional volunteer, and certainly
never lacked for things to do. Some of the highlights of her service include:
Longtime, active member of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization), a
philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of women; educate
and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations.
Co-founder of the downtown Springfield marketplace Antique Peddler
Actor in plays at the Robinson Theatre and Very Little Theatre
City Councilor from 1977 to 1986
First female Mayor, serving from June 1986 – December 1986
Performed and served on the Board of the Encore Theatre, a local organization dedicated
to connecting elders with youth through shows based on the performers' lives. Encore and
Sandy were a perfect fit: not only could she sing, act and tap-dance, but she was a
kindred spirit for every child she met.
Served on the Justice Center Naming Committee Panel in 2008
In 2012, donated the old Depot Clock and historical photos which once hung in the
original Freight Station in Springfield prior to it being torn down in the 1940’s. The clock
now hangs in the Springfield Chamber of Commerce Depot Building along with the
photos and a plaque explaining the history of the clock.
Not only was Sandra committed to her community and its citizens, she also was dedicated to her
family and friends. When her husband Gordon was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, she
cared for him herself until that became impossible. He moved to Elder Health and Living, and
she was with him every single day until he died in 2014. She was deeply loved by her children,
grandchildren and many friends.
