September 20, 1991 City of Springfield Building Safety Division 225 Fifth Street ,> Gentlemen; ~ As a licensed electrician I have conducted an'lextensive inspection at the McKenzie Theater at 630 Main St~. Though the electrical system is old and in need of maintenance in some . areas, I see no reason for it to be judged hazardous or unsuitable for public access. In some ways the norms and standards of the period (late forties) go far beyond those of many modern installations ~i.e. the building is wired almost entirely in rigid conduit). On the other hand, time-worn factors may be suspect regarding interruption integrity of existing circuit protective devices. Insulation breakdown was evidenced in one area, caused from the heat of an incandescent lamp, and I replaced the wire in the entire circuit. In the near future I intend to check other areas more thoroughly and run a megger test on the branch circuits. An immediate problem had been insufficient circuit ampacity to supply the connected load to the concession area. I provided four new 20amp circuits and disconnected the existing circuit. One potential hazard I detected involved neon transformers for valence auditorium lighting; I disconnected the circuit at the panel. Many abandoned circuits existed in the building, some which had been disconnected long before, (such as the seat-mounted downlighting), and others which served no apparent purpose which I disconnected. . The projection equipment is enclosed in a concrete booth, and though possibilities may exist for potential hazards because it is an antiquated system, it is only operated and serviced by qualified personnel. There remains to be done some minor clean-up such as boxes 'covered and knockouts sealed, which will be done shorly. . Please let me know if I can answer any questions or be of any more help. jJ;;);?:/t.{ David P. Stuck Stuck Electric Co.
