RE' Placement of Structural CMU Walls
Texaco - Spnngfleld
Springfield, Oregon
Dear Michael,
On Wednesday, August 28. 1996, the Special Inspector for the above
mentioned project called our office. He Informed us that the mason contractor
had begun to set block at the construction site and was not vibrating the grouted
cells as required in the Uniform Building Code. The inspector informed the
c(\ntr~ctor fh:.:lt th~ cell~ n~edQd to be vibr:::atQd, but by the time thEl contraotor
got a vibrator to the Site, he was only able to vibrate the pilasters supporting the
roof steel beam At the tIme, he had placed three courses of block on all four
sides of the bUilding, We reviewed our design for the block walls and pilasters
to determme maxImum stresses, It is our opinion that the maximum stresses In
the wall are at mid-heIght Therefore. the first three courses which were not
vibrated, is not cntical, and since the pilasters were vibrated, they should be
satIsfactory .
It IS our recommendation, based on our review of the Information obtamed from
the special inspector, that the 3 courses of block walls and pilaster, are
constructed sufficiently to support the design loads and do not need to be
removed We do however, require that the remaining walls and pilasters to be
constructed, be vibrated, and built, In accordance with the Uniform BUilding
Code
If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not heSitate to
call or office
Sincerely,
0/-!2,~
