October 5, 1999 Vern Benson 940 Highway 99 North Eugene, OR 97402 'SilPO ~~~ RE: Slope Protection Lots 4 and 5, Thurston Ridge Subdivision, Springfield Dear Mr. Benson: Please find attached two cost-effective alternatives to transition and protect the cut/fill slope between Lots 4 and 5 of the above referenced project. The slope is approximately 8 feet in height and separates two garage structures that are approximately 18 feet apart. The on-site soil is a light brown silt according to soil test data provided by Foundation Engineering, Inc. ;-. The simplest transition is to slope the soil at a 1.5:1 slope (1.5 horizontal to 1 vertical) and vegetate all exposed soil surfaces. There is sufficient room to maintain a three-foot wide level area adjacent to both structures (see attached detail). This method of slope protection is acceptable to the city as indicated in the plan review comments for the Land & Drainage Alteration permit (Journal #99-07-169). If the vegetation cannot be well established prior to the rainy season, consider applying temporary slope protection such as mulch, jute blankets, or other erosion control products. The second alternative is to utilize a landscape block retaining wall system, such as Anchor Diamond@, as shown on the attached detail. This retaining wall system can be placed up to four feet in height without requiring an engineered geogrid or geotextile soil anchoring system. A reinforced concrete footing and wall can be designed and constructed to retain the soils, however, the landscape block retaining wall system is more cost effective in this application. No major loads, such as a structure or retaining wall, should placed in a zone that extends back from the base of the wall at a 1:1 slope as shown on the attached detail. There is sufficient room to install two 4-foot high walls while maintaining at least five feet of level area adjacent to both garage structures. The two retaining walls will be at least six feet apart. . A granular drainage layer should be installed behind the wall to prevent buildup of hydrostatic pressure due to poor drainage characteristics of the soil. The drainage layer consists of a minimum 12-inches of free draining aggregate (drain rock) extending from 6-inches below the wall to within 6- inches of the top of the wall. Place filter fabric between the drain rock and October 5, 1999 Mr. Vern Benson /~ Page 2 soil to prevent infiltration of fines into the drainage layer. A 4-inch perforated pipe should be placed behind the wall; the invert located 6 inches above the bottom of the drainage layer, and drained to an approved disposal system (curb & gutter or storm drain pipe). The same slope protection alternatives can be used on the slope north of the garage on Lot 5, Retaining wall systems, such as the Anchor Diamond@, are pre-engineered and designed to retain soil as long as installed in accordance wi th manufacturer's recommendations. Our review of the slope protection alternatives does not include evaluation or design of a retaining wall system.
