Additional calculations were submitted for two interior shear walls for the subject building by Keating
Engineering. The calculations and accompanying drawing confirm that the placement of the existing
holes in the walls will not interfere with the required shear values for the walls as shown.
I called the engineer to confirm whether he is aware that the larger hole (21"x21") in the "interior shear
wall with penetrations" has cut through a vertical 4x4 stud located in the wall. Mr. Keating stated that
the 4x4 studs were necessary because of the nailing requirements for the wall, but the cut stud will not .
significantly weaken the wall in either shear or bearing. He said that additional blocking or headers
would not be required between the severed stud and adjacent studs.
I also asked Mr. Keating about the special nailing at the bottom plate (16d @2"0.c.)andthetopofwall
connections (A-35's at 6" o.c.). He said that they were requirements in the original wall design, and
were not changed in this calculation. He noted that he did not observe those walls before they were
covered with finish materials, but has no reason to believe that the walls would have been built without
the required connections (the walls are now enclosed with finish materials).
Note: The subject walls were originally framed under a previous building permit.
