PURPOSE AND SCOPE
As r&qtJ98l8d. K & A Engineer1ng. Inc, has completed mOnltortng the construction of Individual foundation pads
at the SUbject new residential SlJ!)(!M8/on. 39 indMduaJ foundation pads were construcf.8d at the site and
prepared ready tor folTl1lng new foundations.
Prior to construction, a GeotechnlcallnvmJgation1 was made of the subdivision to develop specific
racommsndatlons for developing the slt810r IIsldentlal fOU~atfOnsf~' and WJtJes.
The purpose Of our 81JVices was to provide monttor constructlon at foundation paas to aS5tJrU that conmmtion
cl1t8rla outlined In the geo1schnlcaJ Investigation was addressed, .
11l1s report documents foundation pad construction and makes reoammendati~ for suitability for resldentllll
foundation construcIIOn.

The foundltion pads deveJoped for this project an: to support conventionally framed residllntial atNctu1'88
supported by conwntlonal east-ln-place conCRrtB $prBad footings. Due to the slope ar 1118 Slta most of tile
foundation pads were constructed In two or IT1OI1 benohes, separated In grade by approximately 1 to 2-feet
FoundlUoa SOils
1l1e GeotechnlcallnvestlgaUon (BoIre) had predicted 1hat high plasticity slits or clays would underUa the site.
Excavation for the 1*18 confirmed that ill most of the foundation pads, 1here was 1 to 3-feet of a gray. hlghty
plutlc, modllral8ly atIrf. and moist sill In some locations the gray sift contained a significant amount of sub-
rounded Ign8OU8 cobbte$. ThIs silt was ortsn covered by 0.6-10 1.o-feet of damp, very 1ow..cJens1ty peaty siltS.
Weathered yaIow-tan tuffaceous siltStone or sandstone was encountered underneath the plastic silts.

The gray plastic stIIs and gray plastic tlllt8 with oobbles were deepest through the westsm portion of 1he
subdivision. Isolated zones of gray plastio sltt Dr plastic silt with cobbles were also encount8l'8d throughoUt the
centJal and eastern portions at the oubdMslon.

Because the depth and &)bot of soYs vaned significantly acro~ the 9ubdlv~n, ~h pad was 8'laluated
IndMdualJy to datlrmfns the proper depth of excavation and the amount of &elect fin to be placed in the
excavation.
For many of ~ foundatiOn pad8, the depth to weathered slRstone or sandstone was less than 2.feet and, In
these cases. the foundation pads were excavated to bsdmCk, and graded smooth, level, and free from 1008&
materfals. In ~ casas the base or the excavation was in two benches separated ir1 grade from 1 to 2.feet.
Stlect aranular fill was placed In the prepared excavation and brought 10 footing grade.
In those .. of deeper OIlY prastlc sII, the sifts weAl removed to a'mlnlmum depth of 1 &-inch08 bBlow footing
grade. The battoroo of the mccavatIons were graded SmootI'I, revsl, and free from loose matfJrials. In most
cases the base of the mccavatIon was In two benohas BeparatBd In grade from 1 to 2-faet. Select granular fin
was placed in the ~ excavation and broooht tD footing grade.
In aU Ci$e$ where peaty slits were encountered, the peaty-allls were completely remavad frOm the foundallon
area.
