Dear Mr. McMillan,
I have completed the pipe support analysis for the new natural g88 service at the SierraPine
Springfield Plant. If the distance between supports is no more then 30 feet and the line is braced
laterally every 40 feet, the requirements of the UBC and ASME Pressure Piping Code. B31 1,
are satisfied. To limit the spans to 30 feet, two additional supports will be required. The
location and suggested design of these supports are shown in attached sketches "An and "BY>. To
comply with the lateral bracing requirements for wind and seismIc loading, the existing support
at the south side of the tower should be braced as shown in sketch "C".
The ASME Power Piping Code. B31.1, gives a suggested support spacing of 21 feet for gas
service. This spacing is applicable for all areas ofthe country, no pressure restrietion, and a
maximum temperature of750 degrees Fahrenheit. This suggested spaeing is a good guide, but it
does not need to be followed if a span calculation is performed on the specific pipe ,installation.
Because the existing line is low pressure (30 psi), low temperature, and in a moderate seismic
and wind loading area; the calculations show that the spacing can be increased. The
recommended 30 feet spacing still provides for a safety factor and possible loads during
maintenance.
