Re: Post and beam. installation at 6569, 6571, and 6573 Jewel Street Springfield Job 297-03
As requested by Scott Harpool an inspection was performed to determme the adequacy of the
beam bearing at the formed beam pockets of the foundation stem wall. Four by six floor girders
were installed in beam. pockets formed to receive 4X8 floor girders. Wood shims were installed
in order for the 4x6 beams to have bearing on the foundation. The east foundation was shimmed
wIth 2x stock laid flat (perpendicular to grain) and the remaining two were shimmed with end
(parallel to grain) bearing. Structurally both methods are adequate as far as allowable bearing
stresses for wood members are concerned, but the foundations shimmed with end bearing are
subject to differentIal shrinkage and splitting with the grain due to the minimal( 2 W' ) length.
At the time of the inspection these shims were loose and splitting along the grain was evident.
These conditions can cause problems in the future as beanng IS lost and "squeaky" floors may
occur. It is recommended that the two foundations be shimmed with flat stock as the east
foundatlOn is This method was discussed with Bob Barnhart, City of Springfield inspector at the
site, and he agreed to approve the foundatlons if the re-shimming is accomphshed. A copy of
this report will be sent to Bob Barnhart.
