Field Observations and Comments
Observed the Hydration and compaction effort of native soil structural fill with excavation areas A and B,(Please see
the attached map for locations). Centerline Construction used a bulldozer mounted sOII-npper bar to rip the first lift
(approximately 1-2 feet thick) of native soil fill above subgrade. Water was applied to the surface of this lift from
Ambleslde Drive with a Side-spraying water truck
Performed fIeld nuclear mOIsture-density test on the first 11ft of native soil fill. Based on the AASHTO T-99 theoretical
""'8Xlmum dry density and optimum moisture for this material, this lift is unacceptable at this time In conducting three
;>Ioratory test pitS within excavation A, it was revealed that the subgrade had been npped up by the hydration effort
applied to the first lift The mixing of material into the first 11ft made achieVing a Uniform above optimum mOisture
condition difficult. In diSCUSSing this situation with Mr. Glenn Ling (Project Engineer), Troy Hull (PSI), and Mike
Kirkpatnck (Foreman, Centerline Construction) it was decided that a shallow ripping and application of two full water
trucks of water to this lift would be followed by moisture-density testing again on Monday 10/11/99
Inspector: Mike Dewey
